Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Woodland Mills, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities across the country available to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for most cases. The hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored assessments.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for detecting substance use. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing over the conventional urine method. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, probation authorities, and courts. The key advantage of these tests lies in their extended detection window—up to 90 days—and the supervised collection method makes tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a crucial means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This stage includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a highly challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests may reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent absorption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
