Accredited Drug Testing furnishes comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wynnburg, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, boasting testing centers across all cities Nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body may be applicable. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over the past few years, employing a hair follicle drug test method for drug testing has become more prevalent. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts demand a hair drug test instead of the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and those on probation. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is the extended detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. However, the urine test remains the most precise choice for drug use detection within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by locking in biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reflect drug and alcohol intake within an approximate three-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

To conduct screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp is required to obtain 100mg of hair, which is ideal. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be collected. When 'head hair' is mentioned, it pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' refers to other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, confirmation of a positive screen is essential for legal admissibility. Any specimens indicating potential positivity during Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

For samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial batch is prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at much lower concentrations than in other forms like urine or saliva, contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Post-screening, positive results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing, which has a shorter window of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more credible results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a consistent pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
