Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Agua Dulce, Texas. Specializing in hair testing, our facilities nationwide can conduct both drug and alcohol hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, though body hair can also be used. Custom tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances are available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many organizations, including employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, now opt for this test over the traditional urine test. This method is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies due to its extended detection window, which can be up to 90 days. Collecting the sample under observation also reduces the possibility of tampering. However, for drug use within the past five days, a urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When the sample is taken near the scalp, it offers up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample section measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or more than 10-panel screens, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair forms (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is logged into the lab's system. This includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing required data entry aside from what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug use. It serves as a cost-efficient means to rule out drug consumption in most samples, though a positive result in screening must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for further processing in Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of drug use, indicating patterns beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Agua Dulce, TX, offers several advantages over urine tests. Accuracy is a key factor, with hair tests providing more reliable results. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can detect drugs over a longer period, reducing the likelihood of false negatives. This superior detection method gives employers greater confidence in screening efforts.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection period for hair follicle testing is a standout benefit for employers in Agua Dulce, TX. This method can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a clearer picture of an applicant or employee's substance use history. Such a comprehensive overview assists in making informed decisions about hiring and workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
