Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Alamo Alto, Texas. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities throughout the country ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for analysis. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more through tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation commonly rely on hair testing. The key advantage of this method lies in its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, while being conducted under direct supervision, making it virtually tamper-proof. Regardless, urine tests remain the most precise when detection of recent drug use within the past 5 days is necessary.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month observation period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and furnishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift examination for drug abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective measure to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is indicated as positive at the Screening phase, more hair is collected from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug evaluations can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is considerably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical data: It can present a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug evaluations are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
