In Alton North, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for drugs or alcohol, we provide access to testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options, offering a custom-tailored testing approach.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method over traditional urine tests. It's increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation requirements. Their main advantage is the extended detection period of drug use, up to 90 days, through observed sample collection, which is tough to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has garnered recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged archive of alcohol and drug markers by embedding them within the filaments of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" is specific to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This comprises certifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further affirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test results in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a depiction of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: There's a roughly 5-7 day delay before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite density in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
