Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Alvord, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in such testing and have centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, hair on the crown or body, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. These tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analyses cater to zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. Its main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring an observed process that's tough to falsify. However, for recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers within a hair strand capture biomarkers, thus offering a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. This method is straightforward to perform, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis. For tests such as EtG, additional add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale helps ensure precise measurement of the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab's tracking system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completes any absent data that the electronic chain of custody did not cover.

Screening is a preliminary assessment aimed at quickly identifying drugs of abuse. While it provides a cost-efficient method to potentially dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive findings must undergo further testing to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate a confirmation step.

For samples that yield a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in Extraction. The extraction process retrieves drugs from hair at much lower rates compared to methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, marking hair drug screening as a particularly challenging area.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that initially test presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation whenever necessary. The full sequence of laboratory operations from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insights: This method can reveal a history of drug use over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks sensitivity for recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the presence of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually examines the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
