In Amargosa Colonia, Texas, Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, we offer specialized services nationwide with centers in every city equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. Various analyses including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized hair testing options are available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and those in Substance Abuse sectors prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. This method is favored by those enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, courts, or for individuals under probation. The main advantage is the extensive detection period for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, and being less prone to manipulation. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands trap biomarkers within their fibers, providing a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional testing, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, there is a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires verification for court acceptance. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation process.

For samples initially flagged positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: Hair tests can reveal a drug use trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as “hair follicle tests”, this terminology is somewhat misleading as the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing Advantages in Amargosa Colonia, TX highlight superior detection capabilities against traditional urine tests. With a longer detection window and minimal chances for tampering, hair tests offer higher accuracy and are favored by employers seeking reliable drug screening methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
