In Amistad Acres, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Our nationwide testing centers are equipped to conduct hair drug or alcohol tests. For most analyses, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from your head or body. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. This method suits zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation scenarios. The main advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best for detecting usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample composed of approximately 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not supplied by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for abused substances. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive Screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen is potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of positive Screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • High precision: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, therefore enhancing accuracy.
  • Reflective historical data: It displays a pattern of substance use over time rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
