Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screenings in Armstrong, Texas. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, look no further. Our centers are spread across all cities nationwide, making hair testing accessible. To perform a test, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more specialized options.

Lately, drug testing trends show a shift towards hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair tests over urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies prefer this method for its long detection period, up to 90 days, and foolproof collection. Urine tests remain the best for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term indicator by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol use over a period of up to around three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, yet a positive finding requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially testing positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Challenges:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
