Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Arnett, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and operates testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is often used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug assessments in testing methods has increased. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now demand a hair analysis instead of traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug examinations are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and probation departments. The main advantage is a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, through observed collection, reducing cheating risks. For detecting recent drug use, under 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Offering a long-term history, hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, it can present a detection span for alcohol and drugs of roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. An additional 150mg of the sample is advised for EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels. We advise the use of a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair refers to other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped properly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for drugs. While it serves as an economical method to rule out drug use in numerous samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmed positive screening results are obtained through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect more recent use.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers a record of drug use history over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent usage detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally more expensive than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
