Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arp, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, and we operate testing centers nationwide that can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for the test. Hair tests can be conducted to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing is increasingly conducted using a hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero tolerance for drug use, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it highly difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair shaft captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal use for a span of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An ideal sample would consist of a 1.5-inch length containing around 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, which provides 100mg of hair suitable for testing and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When talking about head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types, such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The procedure for analyzing drug test results in a lab involves these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entries not available in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial assessment for drug misuse. Though Screening offers a low-cost solution to exclude drug exposure for most samples, any positive results from screening should be confirmed to validate them for legal proceedings. Those samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require another confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at relatively lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug analysis stands as the most intricate procedure to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples initially marked as presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab analysis, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug intake for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug analysis is challenging to subvert, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical context: This method can map out drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become apparent in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates might influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although widely known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
