Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Austin, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it’s for drugs or alcohol, they have nationwide centers ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized examinations.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer it over urine tests. It’s favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and recommended for probation checks. The key advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with observation during collection that makes cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it offers an extensive history of substance use. Hair sampled near the scalp can indicate alcohol and drug presence for roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirming results. For EtG enhancements and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is ideal. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advised for precise specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be absent, equivalent body hair may be collected. Discussions of head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair refers to other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage involving the integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for potential drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a screen testing positive requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptuous positive screen result, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire processing sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer substance detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to compromise, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: These tests highlight trends in substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate immediate use: Drug presence in hair is detectable only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.
