Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Avoca, Texas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair assessments with facilities available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.
Recently, the preferred drug testing approach increasingly includes hair follicle tests. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair analysis over the usual urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, collected under observation and nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain highly accurate for recent drug use in the past 5 days.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in its growing strands. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair might be collected. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the preliminary process of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry that wasn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening initiates a quick preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage for most samples, a positive screening needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require another confirmation.
Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much-reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to perform.
Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
