Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug testing in Bayview, Texas. Specializing in hair testing for drug and alcohol detection, we have centers nationwide capable of performing hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing choices.

In recent years, the trend in drug testing methods increasingly favors hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair assessments over the standard urine test. Particularly for those reporting zero-tolerance policies, these tests offer benefits including a 90-day detection period and difficulty to cheat. However, for recent use, urine tests remain effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG screenings, additional tests, or tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision weight measurement. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab process for drug test outcomes involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample within a lab's framework. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening delivers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical path to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive indication must be verified for legal validity. Samples with suspected positive results in Screening must undergo an additional confirmatory test.

For samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at a lower density than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids) which is why hair drug evaluation is a complex technique to conduct.

Any positive outcome from the Screening process is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage details: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not limiting to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the testing process examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bayview, TX, the superiority of hair follicle testing over urine tests is evident. Hair tests provide extended detection, capturing a wider history of drug use. Unlike urine tests, which are limited in timeframe, hair tests reveal substance use up to 90 days back, offering a comprehensive view.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
