In Bear Creek, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide including every city. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the crown of the head, but body hair can be used too. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

The popularity of hair follicle testing for drug detection has grown in recent years. Many organizations such as employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary oversight favor these tests for their extensive detection period, which spans up to 90 days. Observed collection ensures the integrity of samples, making the test nearly tamper-proof, though for the most recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is ideal. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody regimen.

Screening offers an initial, swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it’s a cost-efficient approach for negating drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral specimens), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably tough to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
