Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bellevue, Texas. For those requiring a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by testing locations across the nation, including cities everywhere. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is suitable for testing. Hair analysis can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing services.

Lately, hair follicle testing has gained prominence as a standard drug testing method. It is preferred by many employers, judiciary, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Organizations with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probationary measures increasingly utilize hair drug tests. The major advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision which is almost impossible to fake. However, for recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and other substances. Its collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it's convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data recording if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for substance use. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening mandate subsequent validation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is derived from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It outlines a timeline of drug consumption over extended periods, beyond just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become discernible in hair roughly after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The merits of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Bellevue, TX are compelling. Superiority in detection accuracy is evident, capturing a wider substance timeline. Unlike urine, which may miss older drug use, hair testing provides a broader view of an individual's narcotics history. This makes it a more reliable choice for several institutions aiming to ensure a drug-free policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
