Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Belmont, Texas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair assessments is unparalleled, with facilities situated in cities nationwide equipped to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for testing. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prioritize this method over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by companies with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, with collection overseen for integrity, making deception highly unlikely. That said, for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day frame, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

Securing a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the head will yield 100mg of hair, a perfect quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to obtain 150mg of the sample. We recommend measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into the lab's system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial screening for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be acceptable in court. Any samples considered positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample set and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results from screening are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is very challenging to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can outline a trend of drug use over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't find recent use: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricer compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
