In Ben Hur, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by a widespread presence across cities nationwide, where hair tests are available. Recommended hair length for testing is 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

The shift towards hair follicle drug testing has become more prominent recently. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their key advantage is an extended detection window, up to 90 days, observed collection, and increased accuracy over attempted test cheating, unlike urine tests which better detect recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, a bit challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample of nearly 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step covers verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to gain court admissibility. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a comparatively lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), posing hair drug screening as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ben Hur, TX, hair follicle testing trumps urine tests by offering a superior detection accuracy. Hair tests analyze a longer history of substance use, revealing drug use patterns that urine tests can't match. Employers gain a comprehensive substance profile from hair tests, enhancing decision-making and workplace safety.

Hair testing is less susceptible to manipulation compared to urine tests. This tamper-resistant nature ensures that the results reflect the test subject's true drug use history, thus providing reassurance and confidence in the test's outcome.

Extended Detection Window

In Ben Hur, TX, the key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window. Unlike traditional methods, hair testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, providing a detailed history of an individual's substance use.

Employers benefit from this extensive detection as it offers a comprehensive view into an applicant or employee's long-term habits. This thorough examination methodology ensures accurate and reliable data, facilitating informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Ben Hur, TX, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to alter, ensuring that results are untainted and trustworthy.

This integrity in testing provides reliable and unquestionable results, giving confidence to employers and legal systems alike. Hair tests' safeguard against tampering ensures that substance use history is accurately represented.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
