In Bishop Hills, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we are experts in hair analysis, with test centers available in all major cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized testing parameters.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug screening processes. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse professionals now prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers due to its long detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and difficulty to cheat. For recent drug use, typically within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method due to their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands record a long-term usage of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can show substance use for up to about three months. Hair specimens are easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil), taken nearest the scalp offers around 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests involving EtG, extra parameters, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair only, while "body hair" refers to all other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, positive results from screening need verification to be accepted legally. All samples marked presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug testing a more challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods carry out the Confirmation of any positive screening outcome. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating is challenging: It's very difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronicles usage: Demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal immediate use: A span of roughly 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bishop Hills, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests offer a glimpse into recent drug use, hair testing provides a longer detection window, ensuring more comprehensive results.

The reliability of hair tests is particularly beneficial for employers and legal entities requiring thorough assessments of substance use, making it a preferred choice over urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Bishop Hills, TX, hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This longer detection period provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use patterns.

Compared to other testing methods, hair follicle testing’s extended window offers a comprehensive view of an applicant's history, ensuring informed decision-making in recruitment or monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
