Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Amarillo, Texas. If you seek a hair or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing. With facilities across every city nationwide, hair tests can be conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair exams screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other detailed hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests serve those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is an extended detection span of about 90 days, with collections monitored, making cheating nearly impossible. For detecting drug use within five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying the use of substances like drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal substance use within an approximate 90-day timeframe. The collection process for hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transferable.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg, the perfect quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory handling for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory's process. This step checks that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening carries out an initial cursory examination for drug presence. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up legally. Samples presumed positive during Screening require subsequent verification.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly intricate to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumed positive results are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab procedure follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronicles past usage: It shows a pattern of substance use rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Amarillo, TX, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy. This testing method grants a more comprehensive insight into an individual's drug use patterns. Employers, courts, and rehabilitation centers recognize these benefits, choosing hair testing for its reliability and extended detection period.
Compared to urine tests, its accuracy and reliability are unmatched, providing confidence in results.

  • Extensive detection period.
  • Highly reliable.

Extended Detection Window

In Amarillo, TX, employers gain a broader perspective of an individual's drug history through hair follicle testing. This method traces substance use up to 90 days, a great improvement over urine tests, which have shorter windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
