Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Bluetown Colonia, Texas. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert source, with facilities throughout all major cities in the nation capable of conducting hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair analysis can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for substance detection. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation requirements. Their significant advantage is an extended detection period, usually covering up to 90 days, with a witnessed collection mitigating cheating risks. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection, within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying the consumption of alcohol and drugs. The hair strand captures long-term drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. Hair collected close to the scalp allows for detecting alcohol and drugs within approximately a three-month period. It is straightforward to collect, difficult to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum volume for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively, while body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests incorporates four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing a sample into a laboratory system, which includes verifying that the sample's seal and shipment were correct, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data requirements not satisfied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is an affordable method to discount drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs confirming for courtroom validation. Any samples that result in a presumptively positive screen demand a secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations in contrast to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is markedly challenging, rendering results more reliable.
  • Insights on usage patterns: It provides a historical record of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
