Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Santa Maria, Texas. Specializing in these tests, we offer nationwide testing centers capable of conducting hair drug or alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body may be used. We analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. This method's advantage includes a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use detection within the past five days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a record of alcohol and other drug use over time by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. If samples are taken near the scalp, they may offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively adulteration-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional panels, or when conducting examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating a sample into the laboratory's framework. This phase encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inserting any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, rapid evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, positive results must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening call for subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is suspected positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any screening-positive result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All suspect positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheat resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historic data provision: Such tests can outline a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Higher Cost: Hair drug testing typically presents greater expense compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The test, often called "hair follicle test," examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
