Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle drug testing services throughout Blumenthal, Texas. Specializing in both drug and alcohol detection through hair analysis, we boast a vast network of test centers across the country, ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown, or body hair, can be used. You can choose tests specific to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In the past few years, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has gained traction. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor this method over the traditional urine test due to its advantages. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug-free regulations, courts, and probation services. One main advantage is its longer detection window, which can track drug intake for up to 90 days, making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests still lead when checking for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by retaining biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplemental tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's encouraged to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary procedures in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within the lab's system. This consists of confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodologically.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all tentatively positive samples are cleansed as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the process analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
