Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boise, Texas. If you're in need of either drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert with centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body could suffice for these analyses. Hair tests offer options beyond drugs, extending to alcohol/ETG and more tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more popular, often replacing the conventional urine tests. Employers, judiciary bodies, and addiction professionals have increasingly adopted hair drug tests. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation officers all prefer this method. Its key advantage lies in a wider detection window, up to 90 days, secured through an observed process, making it difficult to circumvent. Urine tests remain superior for detecting recent usage, particularly within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their growing fibers, offering a lengthy history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately three months. The collection is straightforward, with little chance of tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG or enhanced tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, we pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test's lab process involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is registered into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it is cost-efficient, a positive outcome in Screening requires confirmation to be legally binding. Any presumptively positive Screening samples must go through a confirmation process.

In cases of positive results during the Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid). Hence, hair drug screening presents greater complexity.

Positive Screening results are subjected to Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair analysis can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It presents a timeline of drug usage rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair analysis tends to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
