Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bonita, Texas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this area, with facilities available nationwide for conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests as opposed to traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are useful for companies implementing strict drug-free policies, judicial mandates, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is the extended detection of drug use up to 90 days, collected with supervision, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting very recent drug use within the past few days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can reflect up to around a 3-month window of substance detection. The process is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are exclusively discussing scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result is processed through four primary steps in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially incorporated into a laboratory’s system. It includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use for many samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require an additional verification.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: These tests offer insight into drug use patterns over time, not simply current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
