Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Botines, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we offer testing sites in every city nationwide to conduct such tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in conducting drug screenings. This method is being adopted by more employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over standard urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and for probationary purposes, hair follicle tests offer a prolonged detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, and almost impossible to tamper with. While for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can chronicle an extended history of substance use, as it captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When cut near the scalp, hair yields a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, extra, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair can't be accessed, an equivalent mass of body hair should be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of processing a sample within a lab's framework. This step checks that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use across numerous samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples presumed positive from Screening need a secondary validation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair testing is the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair classification and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 specifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection interval.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a sequence of drug usage across a span, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
