Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boyd, Texas. Our expertise in hair testing spans across the nation, with centers in every city ready to conduct hair drug or alcohol assessments. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing possibilities.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals frequently choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary arrangements often utilize them. The main advantage is a longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process making them highly reliable. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-duration record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair follicle. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to manipulate, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specify only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all non-scalp hair (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Brief Overview of the Process

The four primary phases in the laboratory production of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This encompasses checking that the specimen was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate substance use for the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered acceptable in legal proceedings. Any specimens that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are separated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair substance screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to validation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Validation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to falsify: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a sequence of substance use over a time span, not solely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair shade and personal hair growth inconsistencies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Boyd, TX, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests with superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests reveal a broader usage history. This advantage makes them especially beneficial for employers with zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests' durability in revealing substance use ensures a comprehensive analysis beyond the limitations of urine tests.

Employers concerned about accuracy will find hair follicle tests indispensable. Their ability to capture long-term substance use provides a full drug use profile, rendering urine tests less effective. This method ensures results that employers and legal systems can trust, reinforcing workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

In Boyd, TX, hair follicle testing provides an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days. This expansive timeframe offers employers a detailed assessment of an individual's substance use history, superior to the limitations of other testing methods. It enables companies to make informed choices regarding potential and current employees.

The extensive detection period of hair follicle tests captures drug use over months, giving a broader understanding of substance habits. This capability aids employers in evaluating candidate reliability, ensuring that employees meet their organizational standards throughout their tenure.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant hair follicle testing in Boyd, TX, significantly lowers the risk of sample adulteration. By utilizing non-invasive collection methods and advanced analysis technology, these tests offer results that are unquestionably accurate. Employers trust this testing method for its resistance to manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
