Process Overview

Though Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in a legal setting. Any samples provisionally positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be provisionally positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are obtained from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisionally positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
