In Brazosport, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in comprehensive hair analysis, available at testing facilities across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. These tests can assess drug use, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent in drug screening methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. Their advantage lies in a longer detection window of up to 90 days and their robust security measures make them highly tamper-resistant, though urine tests remain more precise for recent (within 5 days) substance use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant tool for identifying substance use. It offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10 screens, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional information not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances. While Screening saves costs and rules out substance use on most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening need a further confirmation.

In case a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in other tests (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a thorough review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are extremely difficult to fake, ensuring high accuracy of results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can reveal patterns of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetected: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Costly: Generally, hair drug tests are more expensive than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the methodology analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
