In Brookeland, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we are experts in the field with centers nationwide, including all cities, that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. They are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and by courts for probation cases. The main advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. For detecting drug use within the past five days, however, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drug use. It is straightforward to collect, comparatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to collect 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first processing step where the sample is introduced into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any additional data entry that isn’t captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination to detect drugs of abuse. While it's an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive finding in Screening must be confirmed for it to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If the sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is difficult to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can uncover drug usage trends over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than some other test methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brookeland, TX, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history, detecting substances long after they have metabolized and left the urine. In contrast to the short detection window of urine tests, hair testing covers up to 90 days, offering more in-depth insights.

Hair testing is renowned for its robustness against common cheating methods that can compromise urine tests. This reliability comes from its ability to detect drugs embedded within the hair, unaffected by latest intake or attempts to alter results. As a result, it serves as a powerful tool for employers and authorities seeking unimpeachable evidence of long-term drug use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Brookeland, TX, is distinguished by its extended detection window, offering up to 90 days of drug use history. This allows employers to gain a detailed perspective on an individual's substance use, far beyond what short-term urine tests can provide. The extended period captures a comprehensive picture, aiding in making informed decisions about employment and compliance.

This extensive detection capability is particularly beneficial for employers implementing strict drug-free policies. By covering such a broad timeframe, hair testing ensures that longstanding substance use can be accurately identified, even well after exposure. This aspect makes it a vital component of thorough background checks and ongoing employee assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Brookeland, TX, provides a highly tamper-resistant method for drug screening, significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration. This robustness ensures results are reliable and unquestionable, offering assurance in the integrity of the testing outcome. Unlike other methods, hair testing is less susceptible to temporary abstinence or dilution tactics, making it a trusted choice for accurate results.

Due to its inherent design, hair follicle testing captures a long-term record of substance use that is not easily influenced by last-minute interventions. The risk of tampering is minimized, enhancing the credibility of test results and supporting organizations in maintaining their drug-free policies with confidence, while ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
