In Brundage, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing across all cities nationwide ensures you have options close by. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These tests can be tailored to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation supervisors due to their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, and their resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

For an optimal sample required for both screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is ideal, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. In reference to head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the system of a laboratory. This step includes ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any further data not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-beneficial means of negating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening phase necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is used for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation in the laboratory process is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and through the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Challenges in evasion: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Records past use: It can reveal a pattern of substance usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors, such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth, can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
