Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bryson, Texas. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures you have access to our centers nationwide, all equipped to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used for testing. Our hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allow for customized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in recent times as a method for drug testing. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation are turning to hair follicle tests. The primary advantage lies in the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with nearly cheat-proof, observed collections. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly considered a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by securing biomarkers within the fibers of each growing strand. When samples are taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional screens, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When citing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process consists of verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be accepted legally. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drug extraction from hair concentrates at much lower levels than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect substance use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly tricky to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting the benefits of hair follicle tests with traditional urine testing methods in Bryson, TX, the long-lasting accuracy and reliability offer undeniable advantages. Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests detect only short-term use.

Employers seeking meticulous drug testing methods often choose hair testing over urine, thanks to its unmatched ability to unveil past substance use over a longer timeframe. This reliable method ensures comprehensive evaluation of an individual's history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Bryson, TX, extends the detection window for drug use, making it a valuable tool for employers. This method offers insights over a period of up to 90 days, enhancing an employer's understanding of a person's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
