In Burlington, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a common practice for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies prefer hair tests for their extended detection window, up to 90 days, monitored collection process, and minimal risk of manipulation. Yet, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a repository of long-term alcohol and drug histories by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and follow-up testing. For tests like EtG and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Note that ‘head hair’ specifically refers to scalp hair. ‘Body hair’ covers all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially logged into a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires verification to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples identified as potentially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at a substantially lower concentration than other testing methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening especially challenging.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples identified as presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Captures historical usage: It can showcase drug usage trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are often costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Burlington, TX, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior alternative to traditional urine testing. With its unparalleled accuracy, it offers detection capabilities that urine tests lack, effectively identifying a wider range of substances and ensuring better reliability in results.

Advantages of Hair Testing:

  • Reliable identification of drug use history.
  • Reduced chances of tampering or adulteration compared to urine tests.
These factors make hair testing a preferable choice for employers and authorities ensuring a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In Burlington, TX, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, unmatched by traditional methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
