In Callisburg, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of drug or alcohol hair testing, find reassurance in our nationwide centers that can conduct these specialized tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. Our hair tests accommodate a range of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and is also used in probation situations. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection window, which can identify drug use up to 90 days after consumption, posing a considerable challenge to attempts at evasion. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair sections capture biomarkers within the fiber structures, providing a comprehensive history of substance use for up to three months when segments are cut near the scalp. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment including around 200 hair strands close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG tests, added assessments, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We encourage utilizing a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair should be obtained. The term head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test lab processing entails these key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming the secure sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial expedient assessment for the presence of abused substances. While offering a cost-efficient way to negate drug presence in most cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation for court validity. Any samples preliminarily deemed positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than observed in alternative techniques like urine or oral fluid, underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results are confirmed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptively positive samples are cleansed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can uncover drug usage spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering hair drug test outcomes is notably difficult, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption patterns: Provides drug use trends over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Not reflective of recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair testing is typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Variables like hair color or individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often mischaracterized as "hair follicle tests", these analyses focus on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
