Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Carlos, Texas. For individuals requiring a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting hair screenings. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown of your head or body, is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more standard method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals due to a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and being practically cheat-proof. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures long-term histories of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection scope for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and conveniently transportable.

A sample consisting of 200 strands, measuring 1.5 inches nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—a perfect amount for preliminary and definitive testing. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we solely denote scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory framework. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any lacking data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. Although it is a cost-effective mechanism to exclude drug consumption for most samples, confirmation is essential for any positive screen to hold up in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed to confirm any positive screening outcomes. All samples presumptively identified as positive undergo necessary pre-confirmation washing. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection range of urine tests.
  • Slight risk of manipulation: The difficulty in circumventing a hair drug test renders the results more reliable.
  • Delivers past usage patterns: It provides insight into long-term drug use behavior rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than alternative methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
