In Cashion Community, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert with centers across the country where hair tests are performed. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your body or head. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing possibilities.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for drug testing in recent years. A number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers often rely on hair follicle tests. These tests are advantageous due to their longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection, rendering it nearly impossible to manipulate results. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an essential means for detecting drug and alcohol use. It offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance usage for nearly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of hair, approximately 200 strands or similar to a #2 pencil, taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal amount for both screening and validation. For tests including EtG, additional panels, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. It involves checking that the sample is both sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry tasks not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial and rapid test for drug abuse indicators. It is a cost-efficient approach to discard drug usage in most samples, although a screen-positive result must undergo confirmation for legal admittance. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening proceed to a secondary confirmation stage.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at relatively smaller concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive results from the screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary washing. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation complying with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It demonstrates drug use patterns over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair over a period of 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug-testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individualized hair growth differences might influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cashion Community, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing in several ways. Hair tests offer a much broader detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which only detect recent usage. This makes hair testing the superior choice for accuracy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

In Cashion Community, TX, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, monitoring drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This allows employers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history, rather than just a snapshot of recent activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
