Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Cedar Creek Lake, Texas. If seeking a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's specialization in hair analysis is unparalleled, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct tests. Generally, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body suffices. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers often rely on this method. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, with an observable collection method that's nearly foolproof against tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When acquired near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and uncomplicated to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent in breadth to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. When dealing with EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If there's no scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The major stages in lab-based processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data input unprovided by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, confirmed positive screens are needed for court validity. Any samples Indicatively positive at Screening need further confirmation.

In instances where a specimen is provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any provisional positive screenings involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, every provisional positive sample undergoes washing as essential. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is under review guided by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection range: Hair drug-testing identifies drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Tough to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, hence results are more precise.
  • Supplies historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs become discernible in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs more costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns may sway drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
