In Celeste, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. Whether you need a drug or alcohol assessment using hair samples, our expertise in this area is unparalleled. We have centers across the nation prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown or body is necessary for testing. Various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, can be detected through hair analysis.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure. It is favored by entities such as employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine analyses. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and probation systems prefer these tests due to their extended detection window, usually up to 90 days. These tests are collected under observation, making them extremely difficult to tamper with, though for recent usage checks (within 5 days), urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term histories of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When the hair is obtained close to the scalp, it can reflect a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. By 'head hair,' we specifically refer to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other hair categories (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly by assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and performing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it provides a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most cases, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptively positive result in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The end-to-end laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Due to the difficulty in cheating a hair drug test, the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: Provides insight into drug use habits over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", hair analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle located below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Celeste, TX, hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over urine testing, chiefly because of its ability to provide a more detailed account of an individual's substance use over time. It's not just about immediate consumption but offering a timeline that urine tests cannot match.

Whereas urine tests reveal recent drug use, hair follicle screening uncovers longer-term patterns, offering insight into the consistent behavior regarding drug use. This extended view is crucial for organizations upholding strict substance policies, as it aids significantly in fostering a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Celeste, TX, provide detection capabilities extending up to 90 days, far surpassing the limited detection window of urine tests. This prolonged view allows employers to grasp a complete picture of an individual's substance history, thus aiding them in making more informed hiring decisions.

Employers seeking a comprehensive evaluation of prospective employees’ drug habits find value in the extensive detection period. It furnishes them with historical drug use information, empowering them to maintain a strict anti-drug policy.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Minimizing the risk of altered test results, hair follicle testing in Celeste, TX, offers a tamper-resistant option vastly superior to urine testing. The integrity of the sample is preserved throughout the process, thereby enhancing trust in the accuracy of the test outcomes.

With less potential for manipulation in sample collection, hair tests reduce the chances of foul play. This ensures that employers and officials have access to genuine and reliable data, aligning with a commitment to transparency and accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
