Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Channing, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with locations available across the country that can conveniently conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. Hair testing may analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become more widespread in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers implementing strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation frequently use hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision and challenging to tamper with. Nonetheless, to detect drug use within the recent 5 days, the urine test remains more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use through biomarkers embedded in the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and transporting it is uncomplicated.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. The use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If head hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. 'Head hair' is specifically scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample processing in a lab's system. This process checks that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumed positive during Screening, more hair is utilized from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers usage patterns: Provides a history of drug use, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
