Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests due to their stringent drug use policies. Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of substances by embedding indicators within its growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal use of drugs and alcohol up to about three months back. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.
A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) taken nearest to the scalp, offers 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair; "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The process within the lab for generating a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s systems. This includes checking that it was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finishing any additional data input not provided by electronic chain of custody systems.
Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive result is needed for legal admissibility. Any samples hinting positivity in Screening must undergo a further confirmation.
If a sample shows potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than those typical in other methods such as urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening the most intricate to perform.
Confirmation of any initial positive result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.
