Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Charleston, Texas. If a hair or alcohol drug test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing. Our facilities are available in cities across the country, able to conduct hair tests. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is typically needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of these tests is their extended detection range, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them very hard to falsify. However, for detecting drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by locking in biomarkers within its developing fibers. When procured near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is relatively challenging, and transportation is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg of hair, ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results primarily includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into a laboratory system, which includes ensuring proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any requisite data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an expedited assessment for identifying drug usage. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in numerous samples, a positive outcome must be corroborated for legal acceptance. Any presumptively positive samples necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most arduous method to execute.

Confirming any positive results from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary samples undergo washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time rather than just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate differences can impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to urine testing in Charleston, TX? Hair tests have a prolonged detection duration, making them far more reliable than standard urine tests. Their lengthier detection capability allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of potential substance use.

Where urine tests can be defeated due to a shorter detection period, hair testing holds its own by extending this window. As such, many employers and authorities find hair follicle testing to be the gold standard in drug detection, ensuring greater accuracy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Charleston, TX, offers a vast detection window of up to 90 days, providing employers with a full overview of an individual's drug history. Rather than being confined to recent usage, it examines long-term patterns.

This extensive detection period is particularly beneficial for employers seeking comprehensive insight into an applicant or employee's substance history, ensuring they're making informed decisions when it comes to hiring or continued employment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The risk of tampering with drug tests is significantly diminished with hair follicle testing in Charleston, TX. This method ensures samples remain untainted and genuine from collection to results, offering robust and indisputable outcomes.

Due to the nature of sample collection, hair follicle tests present an almost foolproof method against adulteration, thereby ensuring that the results are both reliable and trusted by all parties involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
