Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chilton, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for specialized hair testing. With testing centers available in all cities across the Nation, getting a hair test is convenient. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly involve hair follicle drug tests. This shift is driven by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who prefer hair tests over standard urine ones. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals rely on hair follicle drug tests. The chief advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation and hard to tamper with. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a formidable resource for identifying the usage of narcotics and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and various drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month period of detectability for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, reasonably resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. When scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than is typical in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Complex to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise findings.
  • Provides historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in findings: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
