Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Choate, Texas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We operate testing sites in every city across the Nation, all equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head are required, but body hair can be used too. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

In the last few years, the shift towards hair follicle drug testing has been noticeable. An increasing number of employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers instituting zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers now prefer these tests because they offer prolonged detection of drug usage, often extending up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, this test is virtually tamper-proof. Yet, when needed to detect drugs consumed in the prior 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The adoption of hair testing has increased due to its effectiveness in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a persistent log of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. By obtaining samples near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. This method of collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial testing and confirmation. When ordering EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a total of 150mg of the sample is suggested. We propose measuring the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment to identify drugs of abuse. Screening efficiently eliminates drug use for most samples; nevertheless, confirmed positive results are needed for court. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For samples suspected as positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original batch and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower levels than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Ensuring any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. Each lab process step from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests' shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical perspective: Provides a comprehensive record of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: Drugs only appear in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
