Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examination services in Circle, Texas. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this type of testing with centers Nationwide ready to conduct your test. An inch and a half to two inches of hair from your head or body can typically be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. They are sought after by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, often favored over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation officers due to their extensive detection period—up to 90 days. They are nearly impossible to tamper with, although for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen volume of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When specifying head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary information not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial rapid inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples yielding a presumptively positive result in Screening mandate a secondary affirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptively positive outcome during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage aims to extract drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those employed by alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessitated. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, a contrast to urine tests with more limited detection windows.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical information: It can reveal a drug consumption pattern over an extended timeframe, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing techniques, hair drug tests generally carry a higher cost.
  • Result variations: Variabilities such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
