Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Combes, Texas. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair examinations with locations across the nation, including all major cities, to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for identifying drug use. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now require hair drug testing instead of the traditional urine method. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation offices. The advantage of these tests lies in their extensive detection window, identifying drug use for up to 90 days, collected under supervision to minimize tampering and is nearly impossible to cheat. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent instrument, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of an actively growing hair strand. Hair samples, taken close to the scalp, can reveal drug and alcohol intake over the past three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering with it is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 strands, akin to the width of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and validating. For EtG, supplementary or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" implies scalp hair exclusively, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab process of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning integrates the sample into the lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not furnished by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admission. Presumptive positive samples in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

For samples indicating positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen, readying it for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other procedures such as urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is subjected to reviews under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
