Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Conway, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are sought by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is a longer drug detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with an observed collection, making cheating difficult. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for tracking alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. By 'head hair', we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the sample's initial integration into a laboratory's system. This entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial straightforward assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is known as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result relies on GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, gets reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The potential for cheating on a hair drug test is minimal, strengthening accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It can deliver a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection for recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth might impact drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
