Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cool, Texas. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, our centers can fulfill your needs across all cities nationwide. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair-based testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more preferred method for drug testing. A number of employers, judicial systems, and abuse professionals opt for hair samples over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers favor this method for its longer drug detection period, up to 90 days. While highly reliable and cheat-proof, urine tests remain accurate for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use over approximately a 3-month period. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG assays, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically, pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types like facial, underarm, etc.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial sample entry into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. While cost-effective for excluding drug usage in the bulk of samples, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal credibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample shows preliminary positive findings in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the primary sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely hard to spoof a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical data provision: Offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
