Providing full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing within Crosby, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for a hair drug or alcohol assessment. As hair testing experts, we have facilities across numerous cities nationwide equipped to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence recently, becoming a preferred method over urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Courts and zero-tolerance employers prefer hair tests due to their protracted drug detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days. It's collected under observation, making it near tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a proportional amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This process ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical method for eliminating drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is potentially positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with potential positive results are cleansed before the confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical information: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use spanning a certain timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It takes nearly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual variation in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Crosby, TX, hair follicle testing outpaces traditional urine tests with greater detection accuracy and reliability. Offering a window of up to 90 days for detection, it ensures a comprehensive review of substance use. Its observed collection process minimizes the chance of cheating, further enhancing reliability and trust in test results.

Compared to urine testing, the advantages of hair analysis are noticeable in its detailed and longer detection span. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies find this method provides superior oversight, ensuring compliance with workplace standards. Its accuracy benefits make it the preferred choice.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Crosby, TX, offers a detection window extending back 90 days, far surpassing other methods. This extensive period captures a broader picture of substance history, essential for employers in vetting protocols. The longevity of detection supports informed decision-making regarding applicant or employee reviews.

Employers benefit from this extended window as it provides insight into long-term habits rather than short-term abstention. The detailed chronological mapping of substance use signals potential risks and upcoming adherence to company policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly lowers the risk of sample tampering, providing assured results in Crosby, TX. Due to its direct and observed sampling process, it makes the sample adulteration almost impossible. This ensures that results are trustworthy and undeniable, a vital aspect for legally binding and employer-mandated tests.

The resistance to tampering protects the integrity of the testing process. Such reliability is crucial for creating an accurate picture of an individual's substance use, helping institutions make informed decisions regarding employment or legal considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
