Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug assessments in Cross Cut, Texas. If a hair or alcohol analysis is necessary, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with nationwide facilities ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair testing provides insights into drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Over the years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle evaluations. Various sectors including businesses, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests to the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle assessments are ideal for those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies due to their lengthy detection period, often extending up to 90 days, and their immunity to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, both drugs and alcohol. It captures a long-term history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month detection window for these substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a minimum of 150mg is advisable. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation are the four core steps in laboratory drug test processing.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within the lab system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid check for drug presence. While screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations considerably lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair test is extremely difficult, rendering results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an extended overview of drug use patterns, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Drugs can take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
