In Cumby, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with centers across the nation that offer these services. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods have come to favor hair follicle tests. These tests are now key for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who opt for hair tests over traditional urine ones. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation use these tests. The main advantage is their detection window of up to 90 days, with results obtained through a monitored collection process, which is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within its strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily shippable.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a more challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed ahead of confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Forgery resistance: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Tracks usage history: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
